  1. Passport

Original signed passport with at least six months of remaining validity and two blank visa pages.

      2. Visa Application Form (Form V.2013)

One completed and signed Visa Application Form.

      3. Passport-type photo

One color photo that meets the following strict criteria: taken within the last six months, against an all white background, printed on high-quality photo paper, 48 mm tall x 33 mm wide exactly. 

      4. Proof of legal stay or residence status (applicable to non-U.S. citizens)

You must provide the original and photocopy of your valid certificates or visa of stay, residence, employment or student status, or other valid certificates of legal staying provided by the relevant authorities of the country where you are currently staying.

      5. Itinerary

Copy of round trip tickets or detailed itinerary for the duration of the trip (Applicant’s name must be on itinerary).

      6. Tourist invitation

A photocopy of the round trip airline ticket and hotel reservation or a cruise ticket may be submitted instead of the official invitation from China.

Additional Required Documents for Recently Naturalized Citizens:

Photocopy of previous Chinese passports or previous Chinese visas (applicable to foreign citizens who were Chinese citizens and have obtained foreign citizenship)

If you are applying for a Chinese visa for the first time, you should provide your previous Chinese passport held and a photocopy of its data page.

If you have obtained Chinese visas before and want to apply for a Chinese visa with a renewed foreign passport that does not contain any Chinese visa, you should present the photocopy of the previous passport’s data page and the photo page if it is separate, as well as the previous Chinese visa page. (If your name on the current passport differs from that on the previous one, you must provide an official document of name change.)

Additional Required Documents for Minors:
  1. Application form. The application form must be signed by both parents.
  2. Birth certificate. A copy of the applicant’s birth certificate.
  3. Parents’ passport copies. A copy of the information pages of both parents’ signed passports.

When applying for a child with Chinese parents, the applicant must also provide proof of parents’ status in the United States.

Additional Requirements for Applicants Born in China, Hong Kong, Macau, or Taiwan

  1. Chinese name. The applicant’s name written in Chinese characters.
  2. Proof of name change. If the applicant’s name has changed since birth, please provide a copy of the court order or marriage certificate showing the name change.
  3. Previous visa. Copy of a previously issued Chinese visa or copy of the information page from your Chinese, Hong Kong, Macau, or Taiwanese passport. Note: If your old passport has not been canceled, you will be required to submit the original passport with your application.
Additional Requirements for Chinese Applicants Adopted by American Parents

  1. Chinese passport. Applicant’s ORIGINAL Chinese passport.
  2. Proof of name change. If the applicant’s name has changed since birth, please provide a copy of the court order or marriage certificate showing the name change.
  3. Parents’ passports. Clear passport information page copies of both American parents.
  4.  Certificate of adoption. A notarized certificate of adoption.
  5. Birth certificate. A copy of applicant’s birth certificate (usually from U.S).

       5. Business invitation

A business invitation letter from the sponsoring company in China. The letter should be printed on company letterhead stationery, addressed to “The Consulate of China, Visa Section”, and signed by a senior manager (an equivalent to Vice-President or above) and stamped with the company seal. The business letter must include the following information:

  • Personal information of the applicant: name, gender, date of birth, passport details, and job title.
  • State the nature of the business to be conducted (i. e. business meetings, contract negotiations, etc.), the dates of the visit, and the names and addresses of companies to be contacted in China.
  • Specify the Type and desired Validity of the visa (i. e. a one year multiple entry business visa).
  • State who will bear the costs of the applicant’s accommodations in China.

Consular Officers may call the inviting host to verify information on the invitation and the visa application. Due to time zone differences the Consular Officer may try to reach the inviting person during what is night in China, and it is important the call is expected.

       6. Business Cover Letter

Letter from US based employer or sponsoring company, on company letterhead, which must introduce the applicant, indicate the applicant’s employment status/position held in the company, and clearly state the purpose of visit to China. The business letter must also indicate who will be financially responsible for the applicant, provide detailed contact information in host country, and specify the number of entries (single, double or multiple) and visa validity (3 months, 6 months, 1 year, etc.) being requested.

5. Official Invitation

Original and one photocopy of the Work Permit for Aliens issued by the Chinese Labor Ministry or the original and one photocopy of the Foreign Expert’s License issued by the Chinese Foreign Expert Bureau.

Accompanying family members must submit a visa notification issued by the authorized Chinese unit (usually the Foreign Affairs Office of the local government) and proof of kinship, such as a certified marriage certificate or certified birth certificate.

As of November 2016, Work Permits issued by Shanghai and certain other select cities need to be issued with a bar code put there by the Chinese Government. Please inquire with your prospective employer if they have provided you with an up-to-date Work Permit. Any previously-issued permits that do not have this bar code may still be rejected by the Consulate of China without it, at their discretion.

A copy of driver’s license, state issued ID, or major utility bill (Water, Gas, Electric, Sewage) for the most recent month, showing the applicant’s name and current address.

  1. Visa Notification Letter

Issued by the Information Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in China and an official letter issued by the media organization for which the journalist works.

The consular office will make the ultimate decisions on whether or not to grant a visa and allowed validity, duration of stay and number of entries based on individual application.

  1. Chinese name. The applicant’s name written in Chinese characters.
  2. Proof of name change. If the applicant’s name has changed since birth, please provide a copy of the court order or marriage certificate showing the name change.
  3. Previous visa. Copy of a previously issued Chinese visa or copy of the information page from your Chinese, Hong Kong, Macau, or Taiwanese passport. Note: If your old passport has not been canceled, you will be required to submit the original passport with your application.

  1. Chinese passport. Applicant’s ORIGINAL Chinese passport.

  4.  Certificate of adoption. A notarized certificate of adoption.
  5. Birth certificate. A copy of applicant’s birth certificate (usually from U.S).

  1. Passport

Original signed passport with at least six months of remaining validity and two blank visa pages, and a copy of the passport’s data page and the photo page if it is separate.

  1. Passport-type photo

One color photo that meets the following strict criteria: taken within the last six months, against an all white background, printed on high-quality photo paper, 48 mm tall x 33 mm wide exactly, provide the full frontal view of your head with your face centered in the middle and displaying a neutral (non-smiling) expression, eyes open, ears visible, no background light or shadow over your face, neither eyeglasses nor headwear except for religious purposes, you should not wear any garment identical to the photo background, your photo should not be affixed to your application and it may not display evidence of adhesive tape or staples.

  1. Personal invitation

If visiting friends or family, you must provide a letter of invitation from the host in China. The letter must be signed and should be address to the “Consulate of China, Visa Section.” The letter must contain the following information:

  • Personal information of the applicant: Name, gender, date of birth, and passport details
  • Details of the visit: Dates, purpose, places to visit, and places of accommodation
  • Details of the inviting party: Name, address, phone number, and relationship to the applicant

You will also need to provide a copy the host’s Chinese ID(both front and back sides), or, if they are not a citizen of China, copies of their China residence permit and their national passport’s information pages.

Also, if visiting family member who is working in China, a letter from the Chinese company (on company letterhead) confirming the worker’s status in China and stating that he/she will be responsible for the family members’ living arrangements and expenses.

  1. Proof of Relationship

Proof of kinship to the spouse or family member the traveler is visiting in China. Include an original and a copy of one of the following:

  • Marriage certificate
  • Birth certificate
  • Notarized certification of kinship

Additional Required Documents for Recently Naturalized Citizens

Photocopy of previous Chinese passports or previous Chinese visas (applicable to foreign citizens who were Chinese citizens and have obtained foreign citizenship)

If you are applying for a Chinese visa for the first time, you should provide your previous Chinese passport held and a photocopy of its data page.

If you have obtained Chinese visas before and want to apply for a Chinese visa with a renewed foreign passport that does not contain any Chinese visa, you should present the photocopy of the previous passport’s data page and the photo page if it is separate, as well as the previous Chinese visa page. (If your name on the current passport differs from that on the previous one, you must provide an official document of name change.)

A visa may be required to transit through China. Factors include length of stay, the airport, and if the applicant intends to pass through immigration. It is possible to stay in specific transit cities without visa for 72 hours on direct transit via the following airports: PEK, PVG, SHA, CAN, CTU,CKG, SHE, DLC, XIY,HGH,KWL,KMG. Please contact the travel agent or airline directly with questions about your itinerary, if you are eligible to transit without visa.
